The best incline walking pads and treadmills in 2026

Walking uphill raises effort far more than walking faster, without the impact of running. That's why incline pads are the fastest-growing corner of the treadmill market.

This ranking rewards steep and motorized incline first, then sturdiness, motor and value.

How to choose

Motorized vs manual

Motorized incline changes with a button mid-walk. Manual incline uses blocks or pins — fine if you walk at one setting.

How steep

10–12% is a solid hill; 15–16% is very steep. Degrees aren't percent: 4° is about 7% and 6° about 10.5%.

Stability

Steep incline puts more load on the frame. Look for a high weight rating and handrails if balance is a concern.

Belt room

Your stride lengthens uphill, so a longer belt helps more than on flat ground.

Frequently asked questions

Is 12% incline enough?

For most people, yes. Walking at 3 mph and 12% is a demanding workout.

Does incline walking burn more calories?

Yes — effort rises sharply with grade at the same speed, which is why brands quote big calorie gains. The exact figure depends on your weight and pace.
